Mongolian Beef & Spring Onions

Over the past few weeks we have been taking a trip around the world in the kitchen. We have had many successes and a few failures. We have experimented with Poutine from Canada, Pizza from Italy, Chicken Korma from India, Fish and Chips from England, Omlet from Germany to name but a few

I got this recipe from Allrecipes and it is fantastically yummy!

  • 2 tsp Vegetable Oil
  • 1 tbsp Garlic, finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp Ginger Root, freshly grated
  • 1/2 cup Soy Sauce (check gluten-free if needed)
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 2/3 cup Dark Brown Sugar
  • 1 lb Beef Flank Steak, sliced 1/4″ thick on the diagonal
  • 1/4 cup Corn Starch
  • 1 cup Vegetable Oil, for frying (I just use the deep fryer)
  • 2 bunches Green Onions, cut in 2″ lengths

Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a saucepan over medium heat, and stir the garlic and ginger until they release their fragrance, about 30 or so seconds

Pour in the soy sauce, water and sugar. Raise the heat to medium-high, and stir for 4 minutes, until the sugar has dissolved and the sauce boils and slightly thickens. Remove the sauce from the heat and set aside

Place the sliced beef into a bowl, and stir the corn starch into the beef, coating it thoroughly. Allow the beef and corn starch to sit until most of the juices from the meat have been absorbed, about 10 minutes

Heat the oil in a deep sided skillet, wok or fryer to 375°F

Shake excess corn starch from the beef and drop them into the hot oil, a few at a time. Stir briefly, and fry until the edges arecrisp and start to brown (approx 2 minutes). Remove the beef and drain on paper towels to remove any excess oil

Heat a pan on medium heat. Place the beef in the pan and stir briefly and pour in the sauce. Stir once or twice and add the onions. Bring the mixture to the boil, and cook until the onions have softened and turned bright green, about 2 minutes
